Working as a clerk, he was encouraged by Edward Burne-Jones and took a few months of evening classes at the Westminster School of Art, his only formal training. In 1893 he began illustrating Malory's Le Morte Darthur, in 1894 he became art editor of The Yellow Book, and his drawings for Oscar Wilde's Salomé (1894) made him notorious. His black ink drawings drew on Japanese woodcuts and the curving line of Art Nouveau. After the Wilde scandal of 1895 he moved to The Savoy. He died of tuberculosis at 25.
