From 1479–80 he was responsible for paintings in the Great Council Hall of the Doge's Palace. He painted devotional pictures and altarpieces, notably Madonnas and sacred conversations, using oil to build soft colour and atmospheric light; Giorgione and Titian were among his pupils.
