As a young man he travelled to Italy, working in Naples, Rome and Milan, where Cardinal Federico Borromeo became his patron and lifelong friend. He returned to Antwerp in 1596 and was based there for the rest of his career, becoming court painter to Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella, the rulers of the Spanish Netherlands. He died in Antwerp in 1625.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eKnown as \"Velvet\" Brueghel, a reference to his refined technique, he painted flower still lifes, paradise landscapes, forest and village scenes and detailed biblical subjects.
