It grew from the Jain manuscript tradition of western India and favours rigorously flat compositions: figures against solid blocks of red, green, black or chocolate brown, a strip of sky at the top and brightly coloured architecture, with little modelling or depth. Early dated examples include a Rasikapriya of the 1630s and an Amaru Shataka of 1652, and the style reached its height in a ragamala of 1680 painted by Madho Das. The tradition declined from the 1690s but left its mark on neighbouring regions.
