Its earliest dated work is a ragamala painted at Chawand in 1605 by Nasiruddin, and under Jagat Singh I (r. 1628–52) the painter Sahibdin led large projects, including a monumental Ramayana, in flat, bright colour with direct emotional appeal and little Mughal influence. Around 1700 an anonymous portraitist working in stippled grisaille brought intimate portraiture to the court, and later artists turned to large pictures of the ruler's darbars, festivals and hunts. Painting continued until 1949.
