He was largely self-taught: he spent only a few months at the Municipal School of Decorative Arts in Warsaw and did not graduate from an art school. He won poster competitions in the 1930s, including awards for a PKO bank poster in 1933 and a Tychy brewery poster in 1935. After the Second World War he worked in Warsaw on political, film, theatre and exhibition posters. He died suddenly in 1954, at the age of 40.

Trepkowski is regarded as one of the originators of the Polish School of Posters. His designs used few elements and simple symbols, and they were often rejected by the state for departing from Socialist Realism. His best-known work is the anti-war poster Nie! (No!) (1952), which shows a falling bomb and a ruined city. His film posters include The Last Stage (1948), My Universities (1948) and Battle of Stalingrad (1950). Nie! is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the National Museum in Oslo.

Tadeusz Trepkowski prints: reproductions of the Polish film posters he designed in Warsaw between 1948 and 1950. The collection includes Moje Uniwersytety (My Universities, 1948), Ostatni Etap (The Last Stage, 1948) and Bitwa Stalingradzka (The Battle of Stalingrad, 1950).

Our selection focuses on his post-war film posters, made for Polish and Soviet films shown in Poland. They show the economical style of the early Polish School of Posters, with a few strong shapes and hand-drawn lettering.

The posters suit studies, living rooms and hallways, and sit well alongside other mid-century European poster art.
