Born in Birmingham, he followed his father to Massachusetts in 1844, worked as a carriage painter and decorator, and in 1853 began night classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He left for California in 1861, first sketched in Yosemite Valley in 1865 with the painter Virgil Williams and the photographer Carleton Watkins, and in 1866 went to France, where the Barbizon painters loosened his handling of foliage. In 1881 he completed The Driving of the Last Spike. From 1884 he kept a studio beside the Wawona Hotel near Yosemite, open from spring to autumn.
