Born in Calcutta into the Tagore family, a nephew of the poet Rabindranath Tagore, he studied at the Sanskrit College and learned pastel and oil painting at the Calcutta School of Art. He then turned from European academic models to Mughal and Rajput painting, and later to Chinese and Japanese calligraphic traditions, with a particular interest in watercolour. His works include Bharat Mata (1905) and a series on the Arabian Nights.
