He trained at the Brooklyn Art School and the National Academy of Design in New York, then spent four years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Henri Lehmann and Jean-Léon Gérôme. He painted portraits, animals and landscapes around Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire, but is best known for paintings of women as winged, robed figures, and for his studies of protective coloration in animals, which later fed into military camouflage research.
