The demon's great club lies beside them. Four small demons peer over the crest, a man in an orange coat stands at right, and a saddled chestnut horse grazes in the corner. The rocks spill past the frame into a margin of gold-flecked paper, with verse panels above and below.

Paintings from the Shahnama made for Shah Tahmasp, who reigned from 1524 to 1576, were acclaimed in their day for their brilliant colour and refinement. Seven of the artists who worked on the book later moved to India to lead the new Mughal painting workshop in the 1550s, bringing a more complex sense of colour and a preference for faces in three-quarter view. The manuscript passed from the shah to the Ottoman sultan Selim II and remained in the Topkapı Palace library until the early 1900s.

The original: a folio from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Firdausi made for Shah Tahmasp, gum tempera, ink, gold and silver on paper, Tabriz, Iran, Safavid period, 1522–37, Cleveland Museum of Art.

Abd al-Vahhab was a Persian painter of the early sixteenth century who worked in the Safavid royal workshop in Tabriz.
