Above her, ribbons of pale orange smoke curl across a green and blue ground and end in three drifting faces with closed eyes. At the foot a bordered panel carries the title Iris, naming music by P. Mascagni, libretto by L. Illica and the publisher Ricordi. Signed A. Hohenstein with the date 98 at lower left.

Adolfo Hohenstein (1854–1928) is often called the father of the Italian poster. Born in St Petersburg to German parents, he settled in Milan and in 1889 became artistic director of the Officine Grafiche Ricordi, where he trained a generation of designers including Leopoldo Metlicovitz. His posters for Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca and Mascagni's Iris, and for Campari, Corriere della Sera and Il Resto del Carlino, brought the flowing line of the Stile Liberty to Italian streets. He returned to Germany in the early 1900s.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
