She holds a small cross in one hand. A red ground with dark grey shapes surrounds them, and a thin red snake winds through the large title letters at the foot. Signed A. Hohenstein with the date 99; the lettering names Puccini's opera Tosca.

Adolfo Hohenstein (1854–1928) is often called the father of the Italian poster. Born in St Petersburg to German parents, he settled in Milan and in 1889 became artistic director of the Officine Grafiche Ricordi, where he trained a generation of designers including Leopoldo Metlicovitz. His posters for Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca and Mascagni's Iris, and for Campari, Corriere della Sera and Il Resto del Carlino, brought the flowing line of the Stile Liberty to Italian streets. He returned to Germany in the early 1900s.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
