At upper left, one seen from behind crouches on a branch in a spotted loincloth, dark hair knotted, offering a leaf-shaped dish of grapes. At right, a curly-haired figure crowned with vine leaves reclines on goat-like legs, arms raised to the dish. Orange sunset and plum vine leaves surround them. Lettering names Cinzano vermouth of Turin. Signed Hohenstein at lower right.

Adolfo Hohenstein (1854–1928) is often called the father of the Italian poster. Born in St Petersburg to German parents, he settled in Milan and in 1889 became artistic director of the Officine Grafiche Ricordi, where he trained a generation of designers including Leopoldo Metlicovitz. His posters for Puccini's La Bohème and Tosca and Mascagni's Iris, and for Campari, Corriere della Sera and Il Resto del Carlino, brought the flowing line of the Stile Liberty to Italian streets. He returned to Germany in the early 1900s.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
