In 1855 he joined a French diplomatic mission to Persia, and later journeys through the Ottoman lands made Constantinople his great subject: sunlit mosque courtyards, fountains, bazaars and horsemen, painted with crisp architectural detail and bright, clean colour. He showed at the Paris Salon for decades.
