From the age of sixteen he published drawings in humour magazines, and he studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture and at the Stieglitz School in St Petersburg. From 1905 he worked for the satirical press and became one of the main contributors to Satirikon, and from 1911 he edited the children's magazine Galchonok. In 1920 he drew the literacy poster The Illiterate Is as Good as Blind.
