A floatplane hangs at the top, a tractor enters from the left edge, a steam locomotive faces front at right and a lorry sits at the centre, while four black oil derricks stand along the foot. Red label strips with white lettering cross the sheet, which advertises the 1927 film Oil.

Alexander Naumov (1899–1928), born in the village of Zhilkino near Moscow, the son of an icon painter, was an avant-garde painter, stage designer, book designer and poster artist. He studied at the Stroganov School from 1911, and in 1919 was among the founders of the Society of Young Artists (OBMOKhU). During the Civil War he travelled with agitation brigades, painting posters and decorating streets. He designed for the Bolshoi and Kamerny theatres, and from 1924 was a staff artist at Sovkino, creating film posters in a distinctive modern style. In 1928 El Lissitzky invited him to help design the Soviet pavilion at the Pressa exhibition in Cologne.
