A career army officer, he studied painting in St Petersburg from 1889 while still in service, gaining admission to the circle of Ilya Repin, and in 1896 he settled in Munich, where he worked alongside Marianne von Werefkin and in 1909 co-founded the Neue Künstlervereinigung München with Wassily Kandinsky. In Wiesbaden after the First World War he reduced the human face to broad, glowing planes of colour in his Mystical Heads and Saviour's Faces, and in his last years to the small Meditations, painted as arthritis stiffened his hands. His work is held by the Museum Wiesbaden, the Solomon R.
