He may have had early lessons from Thomas Sully, and in 1832 went to Paris, attending life classes at the École des Beaux-Arts and copying in the Louvre, before studying in Rome. Working in New Orleans, he was hired by the Scottish aristocrat William Drummond Stewart to record his 1837 journey to the fur traders' rendezvous in the Green River valley, where he sketched trappers and Crow, Sioux and Snake people. He painted large canvases for Stewart's Murthly Castle in Scotland, and in 1858 William T. Walters commissioned 200 watercolours from his field sketches.
