Inside, a bearded man stands with his arms folded, looking up at it, while two more men watch from the right beside a table. Heavy curtains hang at the top of the window and open books lie along the sill. In Verne's novel, Aronnax and his companions watch the creature from the salon before Captain Nemo surfaces to fight it.

Alphonse de Neuville (1835–1885) was a French painter and illustrator best known for his battle scenes of the Franco-Prussian War, among them The Last Cartridges (1873). For Jules Verne's publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel he drew, with Édouard Riou, the plates of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1871): Captain Nemo, the Nautilus and the giant squid as generations of readers first saw them, cut on wood for the illustrated edition.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
