One sucker-lined arm coils around a sailor and hoists him upside down, his legs kicking against a grey sky. A bearded man at left lunges forward; at right a bearded man with an open collar raises an axe overhead, and a figure behind him lifts a second axe. More arms writhe on every side, and dark birds fly at upper right. From Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

Alphonse de Neuville (1835–1885) was a French painter and illustrator best known for his battle scenes of the Franco-Prussian War, among them The Last Cartridges (1873). For Jules Verne's publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel he drew, with Édouard Riou, the plates of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1871): Captain Nemo, the Nautilus and the giant squid as generations of readers first saw them, cut on wood for the illustrated edition.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
