More columns and the line of a colonnade stand in the gloom behind, and a few fish swim through the water overhead. Close horizontal lines fill the whole scene with a dim, still underwater light. In Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Aronnax glimpses the ruins of the drowned temple of Hercules as the Nautilus runs through the Strait of Gibraltar.

Alphonse de Neuville (1835–1885) was a French painter and illustrator best known for his battle scenes of the Franco-Prussian War, among them The Last Cartridges (1873). For Jules Verne's publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel he drew, with Édouard Riou, the plates of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1871): Captain Nemo, the Nautilus and the giant squid as generations of readers first saw them, cut on wood for the illustrated edition.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
