alphonse-mucha-gismonda-vintage-poster-print
Alphonse Mucha — Gismonda | Vintage Poster Print

Sarah Bernhardt stands full length in the costume of a Byzantine noblewoman, a crown of pale flowers in her hair, holding a tall palm branch. A gold brocade mantle falls over a pale blue gown worked with gold. Behind her head a mosaic arch spells out her name beneath the play's title in blue mosaic letters. At the foot, a figure in a headscarf peers out from beneath a ledge, gripping a banner that names the Théâtre de la Renaissance.

Mucha, then a little-known illustrator, is said to have been given the commission over the Christmas holidays because Lemercier's regular artists were away. The poster advertised Bernhardt's production of Victorien Sardou's play, which she directed and starred in, and went up across Paris on 1 January 1895. The V&A notes that its narrow format, soft colours and near life-size figure looked new, that collectors cut copies down from hoardings at night, and that Bernhardt kept the design for her 1896 American tour.

The original: colour lithograph, 1895; Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) created the look of Art Nouveau almost overnight with his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt's Gismonda. Through the following decade in Paris his theatre bills, advertising panels and decorative series — the Seasons, the Flowers, the Times of Day — set women in halos of stylised ornament, pale colour and flowing hair. He later devoted himself to the Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty monumental canvases. His work is held by the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Musée d'Orsay.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order. Unframed prints are made on archival matte fine-art paper.
