alphonse-mucha-job-vintage-poster-print
Alphonse Mucha — Job | Vintage Poster Print

A woman tilts her head back with her eyes closed, a lit cigarette held lightly in one raised hand, its pale smoke curling across the sheet. Her golden hair pours down in thick looping coils that fill the lower half, a spray of red beads pinned above her ear, and a white gown slips from her shoulder. Behind her the brand's monogram rises in large green letters on a mauve ground scattered with smaller green monograms, inside a gold zigzag border with rounded corners. Signed Mucha at lower right.

The Minneapolis Institute of Art presents Job as Mucha treating a poster, a short-lived commercial object, with the care of a canvas, in keeping with the Art Nouveau aim of closing the gap between art and craft. The museum also points to the image's irony: the cigarette papers it sold were a male pleasure, since respectable women of the nineteenth century did not smoke.

The original: colour lithograph, 1896; Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) created the look of Art Nouveau almost overnight with his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt's Gismonda. Through the following decade in Paris his theatre bills, advertising panels and decorative series — the Seasons, the Flowers, the Times of Day — set women in halos of stylised ornament, pale colour and flowing hair. He later devoted himself to the Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty monumental canvases. His work is held by the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Musée d'Orsay.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
