alphonse-mucha-zodiaque-la-plume-vintage-poster-print
Alphonse Mucha — Zodiaque (La Plume) | Vintage Poster Print

A woman faces left in profile, her long golden hair streaming out in looping coils. A jewelled headdress of gems, white star shapes and small flowers crowns her head, and a beaded collar hangs over her pale gown, which is scattered with grey stars. Behind her a halo holds the twelve signs of the zodiac in pale roundels. Leafy branches flank the masthead of the review La Plume, and a calendar grid sits between two ornamental roundels at the foot. Signed Mucha at lower right.

The Mucha Foundation records that Zodiac was the first design Mucha made under his contract with the printer Champenois, drawn at first as the firm's own calendar. The editor of La Plume then bought the rights to issue it as the review's calendar for 1897. It became one of Mucha's most popular designs, and at least nine variants of the lithograph are known.

The original: colour lithograph, 1896–97; Art Institute of Chicago.

Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) created the look of Art Nouveau almost overnight with his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt's Gismonda. Through the following decade in Paris his theatre bills, advertising panels and decorative series — the Seasons, the Flowers, the Times of Day — set women in halos of stylised ornament, pale colour and flowing hair. He later devoted himself to the Slav Epic, a cycle of twenty monumental canvases. His work is held by the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Musée d'Orsay.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
