A woman in a yellow wrap and red dress looks down at the Child, held on her lap in a transparent white cloth and hood, a bare foot extended. At right three men press in: one in a white turban holds an orange globe-shaped vessel, a bald, white-bearded man offers a blue-and-white cup, and a dark-skinned man in an orange turban stands behind a lidded metal vessel. At far left an old bearded man in a red cap looks on.

The original: distemper on linen, about 1500; J. At about eleven he was apprenticed to Francesco Squarcione in Padua, and in 1453 he married Nicolosia, daughter of Jacopo Bellini. He painted the Ovetari Chapel frescoes in Padua and the San Zeno Altarpiece in Verona, and from 1460 was court artist to the Gonzaga family in Mantua, where he painted the Camera degli Sposi. He is known for sculptural figures with firm outlines, bold perspective and foreshortening, the Triumphs of Caesar, and engravings.
