The bust reached the King and Queen in 1637 and was destroyed in the Whitehall Palace fire of 1698. Van Dyck had probably seen Lotto's Portrait of a Man in Three Positions in Charles's collection. He spent six years in Italy, mostly in Genoa, painting its nobility, and in 1632 moved to London as principal painter to Charles I, who knighted him that year.
