A loose white gown and sheet fold softly around her, and a deep blue velvet coverlet trimmed with gold braid crosses the lower right. On the sheet lies a rose stem, its pale pink petals falling loose. Dark curtains enclose the bed.

Venetia Stanley died suddenly in her sleep on 30 April 1633, and her husband Sir Kenelm Digby summoned Van Dyck, who drew her two days after her death. Dulwich Picture Gallery notes that Digby wrote that the painter added nothing but the rose on the hem of the sheet, its petals falling as an emblem of her state, and that he kept the picture as his constant companion. It came to Dulwich in the Bourgeois Bequest of 1811.

The original: oil on canvas, 1633; Dulwich Picture Gallery, London.

Anthony van Dyck (1599–1641) was a Flemish Baroque painter, born in Antwerp, who became chief assistant to Peter Paul Rubens within a few years of joining the city's painters' guild. He spent six years in Italy, mostly in Genoa, painting its nobility, and in 1632 moved to London as principal painter to Charles I, who knighted him that year. His elegant, relaxed portraits of the king, the royal children and the court set the pattern for English portrait painting for over 150 years.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
