Behind them an arched niche opens onto three cypresses and a blossoming branch. Two youths wait at a red lattice gate under a flowering tree on the left, and a white-turbaned elder with a staff stands at the right. Four columns of verse fill the upper half, set in a gold-flecked margin.

The original: folio 535r from the Shahnama (Book of Kings) of Shah Tahmasp, opaque watercolour, ink, silver and gold on paper, made in Tabriz, Iran, about 1525–30, The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Aqa Mirak was a Persian painter of the sixteenth century in the workshop of the Safavid Shah Tahmasp, a sayyid from Isfahan who was a pupil of Behzad, a close companion of the Shah and also a poet. He was the third of the artists who in turn directed work on the Shah's illustrated Shahnama, and he also worked on the Shah's Khamsa of Nizami; his compositions balance solid and open areas and keep the number of figures small to heighten the drama. Writers of his own century praised him as a figure painter and portraitist and as a master of the dragons, phoenixes and other fabulous creatures of Safavid ornament. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
