The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAqa Mirak was a Persian painter of the sixteenth century in the workshop of the Safavid Shah Tahmasp, a sayyid from Isfahan who was a pupil of Behzad, a close companion of the Shah and also a poet. He was the third of the artists who in turn directed work on the Shah's illustrated Shahnama, and he also worked on the Shah's Khamsa of Nizami; his compositions balance solid and open areas and keep the number of figures small to heighten the drama. Writers of his own century praised him as a figure painter and portraitist and as a master of the dragons, phoenixes and other fabulous creatures of Safavid ornament.
