This is the version on wood that Böcklin painted in 1880.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBöcklin painted this panel in 1880 for Marie Berna, who had seen the first version half-finished on his easel in Florence that April. At her request he added the coffin and the standing figure in white, an allusion to her husband's death, and then added both to the first canvas as well. The title Die Toteninsel was given by the dealer Fritz Gurlitt in 1883, and Böcklin returned to the subject until 1886. The Metropolitan Museum acquired this version in 1926.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eArnold Böcklin (1827–1901) was a Swiss Symbolist painter. Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer and formed by study trips to Antwerp, Brussels and the Louvre, he worked chiefly in Basel, Munich, Rome and Florence. He painted mythological and allegorical subjects — centaurs, mermaids, the Cyclops — in a style that became a touchstone of European Symbolism, most famously in Isle of the Dead (1880–86), which he painted in five versions.
