At the centre a small haloed figure on a cloud holds a cross and an orb between the letters IHS. Branches of numbered Hebrew-lettered leaves climb both upper corners around a Latin cartouche. Below, one tree bears tablets naming angels beside planetary signs, a central tree a Latin panel, and a third the tribes of Israel beside zodiac signs. From Kircher's Oedipus Aegyptiacus, 1653.

Athanasius Kircher (born 1601 or 1602 in Geisa, near Fulda; died 1680) was a German Jesuit scholar who published around forty major works on subjects including comparative religion, geology and medicine. From 1634 he taught mathematics, physics and Oriental languages at the Collegio Romano in Rome, where he built a cabinet of curiosities that became the Kircherian Museum. His geological work included studies of volcanoes, and his Mundus subterraneus appeared in 1665. Many of his ideas proved wrong, notably his claimed decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but he correctly linked ancient Egyptian with Coptic.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
