Beneath it a tall statue of a turreted woman, her torso covered in rounded forms, stands on a plinth beside an archway that opens onto miners at a cave mouth. At the right a seated woman writes in a large book while a hatted youth holds a winged staff over her shoulder and a haloed figure looks on. A winged putto at the lower left carries an oval portrait of a man. A verse banner runs along the foot; an Amsterdam imprint dated 1664 closes the page.

The original: engraving, title page of Mundus Subterraneus, volume II, Amsterdam, 1664, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

Athanasius Kircher (born 1601 or 1602 in Geisa, near Fulda; died 1680) was a German Jesuit scholar who published around forty major works on subjects including comparative religion, geology and medicine. From 1634 he taught mathematics, physics and Oriental languages at the Collegio Romano in Rome, where he built a cabinet of curiosities that became the Kircherian Museum. His geological work included studies of volcanoes, and his Mundus subterraneus appeared in 1665. Many of his ideas proved wrong, notably his claimed decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but he correctly linked ancient Egyptian with Coptic.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
