A half-dark sphere marked Horizon Aeternitatis crowns it. Between the circles sit two winged cherub heads, the tablets of the Law, a seven-branched lampstand, a table and two smoking altars, while boxed numbers hang at the sides. Black line on grey-toned paper, signed by the engraver Petrus Miotte, for Kircher's Oedipus Aegyptiacus, 1653.

Athanasius Kircher (born 1601 or 1602 in Geisa, near Fulda; died 1680) was a German Jesuit scholar who published around forty major works on subjects including comparative religion, geology and medicine. From 1634 he taught mathematics, physics and Oriental languages at the Collegio Romano in Rome, where he built a cabinet of curiosities that became the Kircherian Museum. His geological work included studies of volcanoes, and his Mundus subterraneus appeared in 1665. Many of his ideas proved wrong, notably his claimed decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphs, but he correctly linked ancient Egyptian with Coptic.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
