The palette throughout is black, gold and cream, in the flat, graphic style of a 19th-century ornament reference plate.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAuguste Racinet (1825–1893) was a French illustrator and historian of ornament and costume, born and working mainly in Paris. He worked as an illustrator and engraver for the publisher Firmin-Didot, compiling and drawing plates for two large reference works, L'Ornement polychrome (from 1869) and Le Costume historique (1888), surveying decorative pattern and dress across cultures and periods in hundreds of hand-coloured plates. These volumes were widely used as pattern books by other designers and remain a standard reference for historical ornament and costume.
