Trained in Middelburg in the workshop of his brother-in-law Ambrosius Bosschaert, he worked in Utrecht and then Delft, arranging tulips and roses in Chinese porcelain and scattering the table with shells brought back by the East India trade, each one painted as a collector's specimen. Lizards, insects and a bloomed grape mark the moment before decay.
