Orphaned young and trained in the city, he worked almost entirely there, painting altarpieces and series for its churches, convents and the Hospital de la Caridad, and in 1660 helped found Seville's academy of painting. He is best known for his luminous Immaculate Conceptions and tender Holy Families, and for scenes of the city's street children, which made him the most collected Spanish painter in Europe for two centuries.
