A white robe falls to her feet and a deep blue mantle sweeps out to either side against a grey sky warmed with amber light. Below her six winged infants cluster on the cloud: one holds a palm frond, one clasps his hands in prayer, and one in the foreground carries white lilies and pink roses.

The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which holds that the Virgin was conceived free from sin, drew intense devotion in Spain during the 1600s, although it became official church doctrine only in 1854. Because the subject is abstract, painters had to devise its imagery, here drawing on John's vision in Revelation.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1680; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland.

Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1617–1682) was the leading painter of Seville in the Spanish Golden Age. Orphaned young and trained in the city, he worked almost entirely there, painting altarpieces and series for its churches, convents and the Hospital de la Caridad, and in 1660 helped found Seville's academy of painting. He is best known for his luminous Immaculate Conceptions and tender Holy Families, and for scenes of the city's street children, which made him the most collected Spanish painter in Europe for two centuries. His paintings are held by the Prado, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
