Its earliest series, of about 1660–70, are given to Kripal of Nurpur; his son Devidasa painted a Rasamanjari for Raja Kripal Pal dated 1694–95. It uses flat saturated backgrounds, a strong outline, angular figures with large eyes and, for a time, beetle-wing cases for emeralds. Its subjects were Krishna and Radha, the Devi, the Ramayana and ragamalas.
