Script across the top names the horse, and a short note at upper left gives the painter's name.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: opaque watercolor on paper, c. 1720, Minneapolis Institute of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBhavani Das (active c. 1700–1748), also written Bhavanidas, was an Indian painter who worked first at the Mughal imperial court, where he painted court scenes such as The Emperor Aurangzeb Carried on a Palanquin. In 1719 Raja Raj Singh of Kishangarh drew him from the Mughal court to his small Rajput kingdom in Rajasthan, where records show he became the most highly paid of all the state's employees. He brought Mughal draughtsmanship and a refined sense of silhouette to Kishangarh, and was admired for his portraits of horses, such as The Iraqi Steed Jugaldan, which is inscribed with his name. His son Dalchand also painted at Kishangarh.
