boris-kustodiev-the-flea-vintage-soviet-advertising-poster-print
Boris Kustodiev — The Flea | Vintage Soviet Advertising Poster Print

A caricatured face fills the centre: round red cheeks, glaring eyes, a heavy blue moustache and an open mouth, beneath an enormous white fur hat with a blue star-shaped badge, a round red cockade and a red cap flopping to one side with a tassel. A large blue flea sits at the right of the chin. Huge block capitals in red and blue spell the play's title across the lower half, with the theatre's name at the foot. The initials B.K. and 1926 are at left.

Boris Kustodiev (1878–1927), born in Astrakhan, was a painter, graphic artist and stage designer. He studied in Ilya Repin's studio at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1896 to 1903 and helped Repin paint his large commemoration of the State Council. He joined the World of Art group in 1910 and became known for bright scenes of provincial merchant life, such as The Merchant's Wife (1918), painted despite the illness that paralysed him in 1916. After 1917 he drew posters, lubok prints and book covers, and he designed for the theatre, including Zamyatin's The Flea in Moscow in 1925 and in Leningrad in 1926. He died in Leningrad. His work is held by the Tretyakov Gallery.

Each print is made to our Archival Museum Standards: a 12-ink giclée, printed to order.
