bronzino-bia-di-cosimo-de-medici-fine-art-print
Bronzino — Bia di Cosimo de’ Medici | Fine Art Print

A girl sits upright in a carved wooden armchair with a red cushion against a deep blue ground, her centre-parted fair hair cut at the jaw. She wears pearl drop earrings, a pearl necklace and a long gold chain with an oval medallion over a white satin gown with puffed, pleated sleeves and lace trim. One hand rests on the chair arm and the other holds the chain at her lap, and she looks calmly out at the viewer.

The Uffizi identifies the sitter as Bia, the daughter Cosimo I de' Medici had before his marriage, who fell ill in January 1542 and died within weeks at about five years old. Some scholars believe Bronzino worked from the plaster funeral mask. The museum reads the white clothing as an allusion to purity and to her name Bianca, and notes that the medal on her chain carries Cosimo's profile, modelled on a portrait by Pontormo.

The original: oil on panel, 1542–1545; Uffizi Galleries, Florence.

Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo, 1503–1572) was an Italian Mannerist painter working in Florence. Apprenticed at fourteen to Jacopo Pontormo, he later became court painter to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici from 1539, a position he held for most of his career. His portraits of the Medici court are cool, polished and highly finished, presenting sitters with an almost glacial elegance and reserve very different from the emotional intensity of his teacher's work. His paintings are held by the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
