A small white spaniel with russet ears stands on her lap beside one hand. The other hand, in a dark teal velvet sleeve, holds a small gold ball above a rosary with a tassel. She sits on a carved wooden seat with a gold mask ornament and green fringe.

The Städel Museum calls this one of the most important works of Italian Mannerist portraiture and a sign of Bronzino's early skill as Pontormo's favoured pupil; it was once wrongly attributed to Pontormo. The armrest runs parallel to the bottom edge, and the light on figure and niche keeps the viewer at a respectful distance. The museum acquired it in 1882.

The original: mixed technique on poplar, ca. 1533; Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main.

Bronzino (Agnolo di Cosimo, 1503–1572) was an Italian Mannerist painter working in Florence. Apprenticed at fourteen to Jacopo Pontormo, he later became court painter to Duke Cosimo I de' Medici from 1539, a position he held for most of his career. His portraits of the Medici court are cool, polished and highly finished, presenting sitters with an almost glacial elegance and reserve very different from the emotional intensity of his teacher's work. His paintings are held by the Uffizi Gallery, the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence and the National Gallery, London.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
