Kota was formed in the 1620s from Bundi territory, which the Mughal emperor Jahangir granted to a younger brother of the Bundi ruler, and the two courts went on painting in one closely related idiom, sharing artists as well as style. Both favour lush vegetation, dark night skies and swirling water. Bundi leaned towards ragamalas, lovers and court life, Kota towards large hunting scenes and elephants, and paintings that cannot be placed securely at one court carry both names.
