It grew directly out of Mughal painting: the Chunar Ragamala of 1591, probably painted for a Bundi prince by artists trained in the imperial workshops, became a model for the state's painters. Bundi pictures are known for lush vegetation, dramatic night skies, water drawn as light swirls against a dark ground, and lively movement. They favour ragamalas, religious subjects and court life, with lovers and women prominent in the eighteenth century, when the school was at its height.
