Signed and dated 1892 at lower left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1892, Art Institute of Chicago.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCamille Pissarro (1830–1903) was a painter and printmaker born on St Thomas in the Danish West Indies to a Jewish merchant family of French and Portuguese descent. He settled in France in 1855, where Camille Corot encouraged him to paint from nature, and worked for years around Pontoise and Louveciennes. He was the only artist to show in all eight Impressionist exhibitions. In his fifties he took up Georges Seurat's dotted technique for a time, and in the 1890s, when an eye infection kept him indoors, he painted series of Paris boulevards and gardens from hotel windows. Paul Cézanne and Paul Gauguin both worked beside him.
