canaletto-an-island-in-the-lagoon-with-a-gateway-and-a-church-fine-art-print
Canaletto — An Island in the Lagoon with a Gateway and a Church | Fine Art Print

A calm lagoon lies under a deep blue sky, with a low island where a small church with a tall conical bell tower stands at the left and a stone gateway with a pitched tile roof and a statue on top rises at the right beside a ruined brick wall. A stone footbridge arches over a channel, and small figures fish with nets and poles on the near bank. A woman with a child stands at the lower right, and a pale moon sits on the left horizon.

The Saint Louis Art Museum says the scene appears to show a specific spot on the Venetian lagoon but is an imaginative composition. Canaletto drew on sketches made during walking tours near Venice, combining the lagoon with buildings from Padua and a bell tower from a third location. The museum notes that it was painted as one of a pair.

The original: oil on canvas, 1743-44; Saint Louis Art Museum, St. Louis.

Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) was an Italian painter, born and died in Venice. He first worked with his father, Bernardo Canal, and his brother on theatrical scenery, including in Rome in 1718, and from about 1719 turned to topographical views, learning from the older view-painter Luca Carlevarijs. He is known for vedute, or cityscapes, of Venice, painted with accurate perspective and detail. He spent roughly the years 1746 to 1755 in England, painting views of London and the Thames, and also made etchings. His work is held by the Royal Collection, the National Gallery, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
