The National Gallery of Victoria notes that Canaletto's Venetian views are evocative rather than topographically accurate, shifting buildings, proportions and perspective.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, c. 1750; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCanaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) was an Italian painter, born and died in Venice. He first worked with his father, Bernardo Canal, and his brother on theatrical scenery, including in Rome in 1718, and from about 1719 turned to topographical views, learning from the older view-painter Luca Carlevarijs. He is known for vedute, or cityscapes, of Venice, painted with accurate perspective and detail. He spent roughly the years 1746 to 1755 in England, painting views of London and the Thames, and also made etchings. His work is held by the Royal Collection, the National Gallery, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
