canaletto-grand-canal-from-palazzo-balbi-towards-the-rialto-fine-art-print
Canaletto — Grand Canal from Palazzo Balbi towards the Rialto | Fine Art Print

The Grand Canal runs back toward the Rialto between rows of palazzi, green water in the foreground under a sky of drifting grey cloud breaking into blue. A broad shadow lies over the near water while sunlight rakes the façades on the right. Gondolas and small boats carry tiny figures, among them a boat with a red awning at centre right and a moored boat with a furled sail at lower left. A balcony and a church spire rise at the far left.

Ca' Rezzonico, the Museum of the 18th Century Venice, describes this as an early Canaletto and one of a series painted from the same vantage point. The mixed lighting, with sun from the right and a large shadow in the foreground, gives the impression of two suns, which the museum links to his experience in set design. The City of Venice bought it in 1983.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1722; Ca' Rezzonico, Venice.

Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) was an Italian painter, born and died in Venice. He first worked with his father, Bernardo Canal, and his brother on theatrical scenery, including in Rome in 1718, and from about 1719 turned to topographical views, learning from the older view-painter Luca Carlevarijs. He is known for vedute, or cityscapes, of Venice, painted with accurate perspective and detail. He spent roughly the years 1746 to 1755 in England, painting views of London and the Thames, and also made etchings. His work is held by the Royal Collection, the National Gallery, London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
