He holds a shallow glass of dark red wine out in one hand and pulls at the black ribbon of his robe with the other. In front of him a white bowl of apples, pears, grapes and a split pomegranate sits on a stone ledge, with a carafe of wine at the lower left, all against a warm brown wall.

The Uffizi Galleries date the canvas to about 1598, in Caravaggio's early Roman years under Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte, who gave it with the Medusa to Ferdinando I de' Medici in 1608 for the wedding of his son Cosimo II. It was found in the Uffizi's storerooms in 1913 and attributed to Caravaggio by Roberto Longhi. The museum notes that the god's pose draws on classical sculpture, particularly portraits of Antinous.

The original: oil on canvas, c. 1598; Uffizi Galleries, Florence.

Caravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter, apprenticed in Milan to Simone Peterzano before moving to Rome around 1592. He painted directly from live models without preparatory drawings, developing an extreme form of chiaroscuro, later called tenebrism, in which figures emerge from near-total darkness into a single sharp source of light. His frank naturalism and immediacy, applied even to religious subjects, influenced a generation of painters across Europe. His paintings are held by the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Each print is a giclée, printed to order.
