It shows the moment in the Gospel of Luke when two disciples recognise the risen Christ as he breaks bread: one is about to leap from his chair while the other throws out his arms. It later passed to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, and the National Gallery received it in 1839 as a gift from George Vernon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe original: oil on canvas, 1601; National Gallery, London.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCaravaggio (Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, 1571–1610) was an Italian Baroque painter, apprenticed in Milan to Simone Peterzano before moving to Rome around 1592. He painted directly from live models without preparatory drawings, developing an extreme form of chiaroscuro, later called tenebrism, in which figures emerge from near-total darkness into a single sharp source of light. His frank naturalism and immediacy, applied even to religious subjects, influenced a generation of painters across Europe. His paintings are held by the Galleria Borghese in Rome, the National Gallery, London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach print is a giclée, printed to order.
